HILO, Hawaii — A Big Island councilwoman introduced a resolution this week to recognize animals as “sentient beings,” but quickly withdrew it because of a lack of support.
Puna councilwoman Eileen O’Hara says she wanted to “set the tone” for how the county deals with animal welfare, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Wednesday.
Other council members say they support humane treatment of animals but were uncomfortable with language in the measure giving animals rights.
Kohala Councilman Tim Richards, who is a veterinarian, says the county would be getting itself into a “quagmire” if it gives animals the proposed rights.
O’Hara told the Tribune-Herald that the measure was in part intended to influence the county’s next animal control contract. O’Hara said she will change the wording based on feedback from her colleagues.
Another animal rights nutcase, when will they be reeled in from their fantasy world? Some even wanted to erect a monument at a scene of some truck accident where its cargo of lobsters spilled and died on the roadside!
I think she is trying to “save” those feral cats that are causing so much problems in the wild killing native birds and causing the deaths of many monk seals by their feces which contain the toxic Toxiplasma virus.
we haven’t even come to conclusion that tourists are ‘sentient beings’…so leave the four legged critters for later!
Why do we tolerate the feeding of hundreds of wild boar on the Harter property in Kilauea?
1) dangerous attraction as tourists pull over on the highway to view the spectacle
2) unnatural accommodation for a destructive pest which destroys agricultural crops nearby
3) large males are controlling the herd and forcing younger males to the outskirts, causing a major overpopulation of this area.
3) hunters will not hunt in this area anymore because of the awful cheap dog food being fed by the Harters…their meat can no longer be considered “natural”.
Get it together, government officials, and pass laws making a misuse of land like this clearly illegal.
