Several hundred people, including those from major Hawaiian organizations, gathered for the annual Feast of Our Holy Sovereigns at the All Saints Episcopal Church and Preschool in Kapaa to honor the lives and accomplishments of King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma.
“This is the 14th year we’ve hosted the event,” said David Murray, All Saints Church senior warden. “It is always held during the weekend of the Emmalani Festival (in Kokee).”
In addition to the ho‘okupu and hula presented by kumu Pua Gomes and the Haumana O Kanuikapono, the service was extended to include the blessing of the newly renovated Queen’s Chapel.
“This is known as ‘The Queen’s Chapel’ because we are celebrating the memories of both Queen Emma and Queen Liliuokalani, the first and only reigning Hawaiian queen, and the last reigning monarch of the independent kingdom of Hawaii,” respectively, Murray said.
