HONOLULU — The Honolulu Police Department is releasing video footage of an officer shooting and killing a blade-wielding man.
Clips released Friday are from cameras worn by two of the six officers who responded to a report of a man threatening someone with a machete last week. Police say he also had a 12-inch garden shear blade.
The first clip shows officers talking to him.
According to another officer’s body camera footage, he and two officers moved in to apprehend him. The footage shows an officer firing and shots are heard.
Chief Susan Ballard says the man swung the blade at the first approaching officer, and that’s when the second officer fired five shots. The third officer fired a stun gun at about the same time. She says it was a split-second decision.
