LIHUE — Kauai High School’s varsity football team defeated Waimea High School, 21-2, Saturday afternoon at Vidinha Stadium.
Kauai (6-1, 4-1 KIF) totaled 257 yards rushing. The Red Raiders first got on the board in the second quarter.
With Waimea on its own four-yard line, a pass by Menehune senior quarterback Lacin Montemayor was tipped, and Red Raiders senior defensive end Benymar Tapucol intercepted it in the end zone.
In the third quarter, Red Raiders senior running back Austin Paresa scored the team’s second touchdown on a three-yard run.
Red Raiders senior rusher Hoku Parbo got the team’s third touchdown on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Red Raiders senior quarterback Tyler Oshima started Saturday’s game but was taken out in the second quarter. Oshima ended the game 2-6 for 13 yards passing and one interception.
With Oshima out, senior quarterback Kona Asano got into the game. He ended going 7-10 for 82 yards including a 37-yard completion to senior receiver Logan Noice right at the end of the second quarter.
Waimea (1-6, 0-5 KIF) got its lone score in the second quarter. With Kauai on its own two-yard line, Menehune junior linebacker Ariki Cardejon sacked Red Raiders senior quarterback Joshua Rivera in the end zone for a safety.
Prior to scoring that safety in the second quarter, Waimea marched down to the Kauai 12-yard line.
In that drive, Montemayor completed a 40-yard pass to junior running back Makoa Vanaman. Later in the drive, a Red Raiders’ pass interference penalty got the Menehune to the Kauai 15-yard line.
On fourth down and six yards to go on the Kauai 12-yard line, Waimea faked a field goal attempt. On the play, Menehune junior Kawelo Huddy passed toward the end zone, and Red Raiders senior defensive back Whitney Lugo intercepted the ball to deny Waimea.
Both teams combined for 24 penalties for minus 223 yards. Kauai was penalized 14 times for minus 108 yards, and Waimea was penalized 10 times for minus 115 yards.
Kauai will play against Kapaa High School (4-2, 3-1 KIF) on Saturday at Vidinha Stadium. The junior varsity game will begin at noon, and the varsity game will follow.
Waimea will host Kapaa to conclude the Kauai Interscholastic Federation football regular season on Oct. 27 at Hanapepe Stadium.
