The seventh annual Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, featuring some of the premier collegiate golfers in the nation representing 20 universities, will take place Oct. 28-30 at the Princeville Makai Golf Club by host University of Hawaii.
The 20 teams ties for the largest field in the history of event, which represents 12 major conferences from across the United States.
The public is welcome to attend free of charge.
“This tournament is a unique opportunity for elite college golfers and potential future professional stars to participate in an extremely competitive match at one of the world’s highest rated and scenic golf courses.” said Doug Sutter, general manager of Princeville Makai Golf Club. “For most, it is their first exposure to our island aloha, so it’s an experience they will remember for a lifetime.”
Last year, during the second round with the help of soft course conditions and the lack of typical North Shore trade winds, the course record was broken by four different players.
University of Hawaii men’s golf coach Ronn Miyashiro is responsible for doling out invitations and deciding on the participants.
“The tournament is enormously popular,” Miyashiro said.
“It provides a chance for athletes from all over the country to spend time in a tropical environment while also playing competitive golf, so it’s understandable. We actually have a waiting list of 15 teams,” he added.
Simon Zach will be returning to defend his title as well as the University of Louisville men’s golf team defending its team championship title.
After winning the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, Zach went on to win the Gobbler Amateur for back-to-back victories.
Numerous participants from previous year’s events have gone on to successful careers professionally including such notables as Paul Dunne, 2017 British Masters champion from University of Alabama at Birmingham, John Rahm, two-time 2017 PGA Tournament champion from Arizona State, Xander Schauffele from San Diego State, currently ranked 19th in the world, and Ollie Schniederjans, former Georgia Tech star.
