KALAHEO — Police are searching for the driver involved in a traffic crash that occurred late Sunday night in Kalaheo, which resulted in a pedestrian fatality.
The pedestrian has not yet been identified.
About 11:10 p.m., a police officer was driving home on Halewili Road, when he discovered a man’s body on the roadway.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the man, possibly in his mid-2os, was walking in the eastbound lane of Halewili Road when he was apparently struck by a vehicle heading west. The involved vehicle was not at the scene when police arrived.
The man’s body was transported to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending.
Halewili Road was closed in both directions, from about 11:20 p.m. Sunday to 3:45 a.m. Monday, to allow KPD’s Traffic Safety Section to conduct an on-scene investigation.
The crash remains under police investigation, and anyone with information about this incident is urged to call KPD’s Traffic Safety Section, at 241-1618. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers at 246-8300.
Story does not jive. “Man in his twenties walking eastbound in the eastbound lane of Halewili Road. Vehicle that struck the twenty year old man was travelling west on the westbound lane of Halewili Road.” Did the driver of the westbound lane crossover to the eastbound lane and hit the twenty year old man? In what direction was the off duty officer travelling to go home? Sounds like another KPD Officer mishap! He (the officer) found the body on the road after her ran the person over.
