Creativity can help overcome overtourism
Creativity can help overcome overtourism
Thank you, Allan Parchini, for your comprehensive article “OverTourism on Kauai,” published in the Garden Island on Sept. 16. This is a major issue that impacts everyone who lives or visits our island. I’m thankful the state, county, Chamber of Commerce and other organizations are officially acknowledging this fact and at least beginning the process of addressing it.
I would like to acknowledge one state division that has been ahead of the curve. The Creative Industries Division, part of the Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DEBT) headed up by the amazing Georgia Skinner has been working to strengthen, advocate and support creative industries in the state.
These creative industries will ultimately provide sustainable, alternatives to tourism jobs, that will not pollute or destroy the environment of Kauai. They will be the type of jobs that our young people will be attracted to and which will give them the financial ability to stay on Kauai.
One of the premiere programs of the Creative Industries Division is Creative Lab Hawaii. This program provides an educational accelerator for writers, directors, musicians, songwriters, fashion designers, game, animation and new media developers, among others.
The brilliant and super talented Michael Palmieri is the executive director of the program and has spearheaded the program to a number of success stories already. Please check out the website to read about these success stories: http://creativelab.hawaii.gov/
May we all do whatever we can to care for and protect this beautiful place we call home.

You’re against tourism? This may be counter productive to federal aid. Sustainability. Will everybody agree?
Californian transplants moving back is the first and most important step!
these articles are always read like a bad joke: “we came from a state with gated communities and now we’re moving in and will create state with gated communities”
