KALAHEO — Grace Meleana Alana netted 10 points and Jazlyn Corpuz added eight marks to lead the Kauai Lynx fifth grade division girls to a 33-7 win over the Kaulupono fifth grade division girls Sunday at the Kauai Lynx goodwill basketball tournament at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
The Kauai Lynx win clinched the title for that division in the tournament.
“We were scheduled to have other off-island teams participating in this tournament,” said Clarence Sales, tournament coordinator for Kauai Lynx. “But the threat of bad weather saw the teams cancel out, one by one. We still had enough teams from Kauai participating so we changed it to a goodwill tournament for fifth grade and eighth/ninth grade girls. We’re already starting work on another tournament for the Veterans Day weekend.”
Bella Esposito dropped four first-half points, and Kaulupono guard Kiaura Ortiz-Rita was held to just a pair of charity points to keep the Kaulupono girls from being shut out.
The hosting Kauai Lynx, eighth and ninth grade division girls, made a strong comeback effort in the second half against the Dream Team, but the effort came up short as the greenshirts wrapped up a 37-27 win in a late-game surge for that division’s title.
Dream Team’s low post Olivia Malafu netted 18 points, 12 dropping in the first half, to set the pace for the victory. Kiani Pia Salvador exploded for six of her eight total points in the second half to help the cause, and Tacano Largusa dropped a bomb from outside the three-point arc late in the game to spark the Dream Team surge. She finished with seven points in the win.
Jazmine Constantino finished with two of the Kauai Lynx treys to lead the effort with 11 points. Kaede Parubrub dropped the third trey in the first half en route to her seven points in the match.
