HILO, Hawaii — Authorities say a man was found dead after floating face down in water in a remote area off the northern shore of the Big Island.
The Hawaii County Fire Department says the man who was in his 50s was found Saturday in about 5 feet (1.5 meters) of water at Waipio Valley Beach.
Authorities say bystanders pulled the man from the water and attempted CPR until emergency crews arrived.
Because of the remote location, a helicopter transported the man to an ambulance waiting at Waipio Lookout. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities say an autopsy will be conducted to determine the man’s cause of death. Authorities have not yet released the man’s identity.
