How can the county help protect the salt pans?
On Aug. 10, the Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) approved a Right-of-Entry request (ROE) from the County of Kauai to access state DOT Airports Division lands adjacent to the salt beds in Hanapepe. This ROE permit now allows the county to access this area to help protect the salt beds. At the request of the families who manage this area, the county plans to move existing boulders at the beach-end of Lele Road to a more suitable location that protects the loi paakai of Ukula at Hanapepe called Salt Pond, and enable a pedestrian-only access on Kaalani Road adjacent to the ponds. (There is alternate vehicular access to this area on Lele Road.) We are also working with BLNR and DOT to help manage the helicopter traffic over this area.

Are there plans to install speed control measures in front of the Historic County Building, including speed limit signs and a crosswalk from the front steps of the building to the lawn?
To our knowledge, we have not received any formal requests to install speed control measures at this location. However, if it is the community’s desire to install these features, we can work with the County Council to do so.
