Polls are open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. today for the primary election. Late voter registration and in-person voting services will take place at all polling locations.
Anyone wishing to register at the polls on Election Day should report to the correct polling place based on their residential (physical) address. Individuals completing the late voter registration process in the wrong polling place will be directed to the correct polling place to cast a ballot.
Individuals registering to vote at the polls should allow for extra time to complete their voter registration and voting process, and bring one of the following forms of acceptable physical identification: Hawaii Driver License; Hawaii State ID; Military ID; Passport; or current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government issued document showing the applicant’s name and address.
What’s at stake
Voters will be weighing in on several key races to determine who advances to the general election in November.
The Kauai’s mayor’s office has seven candidates seeking the four-year post, with the top two vote getters moving on. Council Chair Mel Rapozo, and Councilmembers Derek Kawakami and JoAnn Yukimura are seeking the mayor’s seat, along with Kapaa resident Debra Kekauala, the head of the county’s Parks and Recreation Department Lenny Rapozo, Ana Mo Des and Hanamaulu resident Clint Yago.
There are 24 candidates for County Council, with the top 14 advancing to the general election when seven candidates will be elected to two-year terms.
In the state representative races, candidates are: Nadine Nakamura, District 14; Jimmy Tokioka, District 15, Elaine (Queenie) Daligdig District 15; Stephanie Iona, District 16 and Dee Morikawa, District 16.
Statewide, the governor’s race in the Democratic primary is expected to be a closely contested between Gov. David Ige and Congressman Colleen Hanabusa.
The lieutenant governor’s race among the Democrats includes Kauai’s Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.
The 2nd Congressional District race has Democrat incumbent Tulsi Gabbard being challenged by Sherry Alu Campagna.
