LIHUE — In his first game at the helm, Red Raiders head coach Jason Apilado got his first career win.
Kauai High School’s varsity football team defeated Kalaheo, of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, 40-6, in an inter-league game Friday night at Vidinha Stadium.
Kauai (1-0) totaled 243 yards rushing.
Red Raiders senior running back Hoku Parbo ran for 90 yards and three touchdowns, and senior rusher Kyle Bisarra totaled 83 yards rushing and one touchdown.
Red Raiders senior quarterback Tyler Oshima added to the team’s rushing total with 49 yards on the ground.
With a 14-6 lead at halftime, Kauai extended its lead in the third quarter with a couple of rushing touchdowns by Parbo.
The team also scored twice on a safety, one of which was scored on a sack by Red Raiders senior linebacker Brixdale Ramos.
Kauai got an early 14-0 lead. The Red Raiders scored first on a 15-yard run by Parbo.
In the second quarter, Oshima connected with senior receiver Pono Carvalho for a 54-yard reception for a touchdown.
Kauai, though, was penalized 11 times — seven of which were for holding penalties that pushed back drives.
Kalaheo (0-1) got its lone score with seconds left before halftime.
With Kauai driving in Kalaheo territory, the Mustangs forced Oshima to fumble the ball.
Mustangs senior Jaden Amasiu recovered the ball and returned it 60 yards to the opposing end zone for a touchdown. The ensuing extra point attempt, though, was blocked.
Amasiu totaled five tackles and the fumble recovery defensively.
Kalaheo was penalized eight times, four were personal fouls.
Kauai will next travel off-island and play Maui High School, of the Maui Interscholastic League, on Friday at War Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.
Kalaheo will next play against OIA’s Kaiser High School on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
