KIPU— Kauai police closed both lanes of Kaumualii Highway near Kipu for roughly an hour and a half on Sunday following a single-vehicle crash.
The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. near mile marker 4.5, just east of Halfway Bridge (Knudsen Gap), when an eastbound Jeep Grand Cherokee failed to negotiate a curve and sideswiped the guardrail along the eastbound shoulder, according to a county press release.
The vehicle then crossed over the centerline and collided with the guardrail along the westbound shoulder of the highway before rolling over and coming to rest on its side.
Bystanders nearby reportedly rolled the vehicle back onto its four wheels before first responders arrived on the scene.
Firefighters extricated the driver, a 27-year-old Kapaa woman, who sustained serious injuries, the release said. Medics transported her to Wilcox Medical Center. She was later medevaced to Queen’s Hospital for further treatment.
There were no other occupants in the vehicle.
Both lanes of Kaumualii Highway were closed from about 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. while police conducted an on-scene investigation.
The crash remains under police investigation.
Bet $1 if the police were to check her phone they will find she was texting at the time of the “accident”. This accident could have been way worse since she crossed the center line. Not sure why checking phone activity is not a part of standard police accident investigation since, studies prove, it is more dangerous than being slightly drunk.
We witnessed this crash on the way to the airport. The driver was driving erratically, drifting onto the right shoulder multiple times prior to striking the guardrail. At the time of the impact it appeared she was accelerating, catching a group of cars ahead of her. I estimate her speed at 40-50mph at the time of impact.
