Please focus on the positives of candidates
Please focus on the positives of candidates
Based on the vast interest to serve on our county council (24) and to be mayor, (7) it is obvious that many residents are disenchanted with the many issues affecting all of us on Kauai.
Personally I feel ashamed of the letters and disgraceful comments that I see in our local newspaper. Most of it is hearsay, or based on rumors (typical Kauai), or from fictional novels of incidents from 23 years ago.
I think every resident on our island and Niihau owe a ton of gratitude to each and every candidate for having the will and fortitude to step up and at least try to make a difference.
Their willingness to subject themselves to so much ridicule is evidence of their integrity and determination to try to make a difference and make things better for all of us.
It’s time to consider the actual positives of each candidate and their potential and ability to actually make a difference in our lives and the traditional values of our island.
There’s too much “negativity” in this country, and it has infected us here on Kauai. Based on my own personal surveys of friends and relatives, I’m convinced that the majority of our island’s residents are tired of this “negative” attitude.
How about we seriously consider the positives of each candidate rather than the negatives. Doing so will likely result in having the most qualified being elected to our county council and the mayor position.

And the job for Lieutenant governor is…P. Carvalho Jr. Do you mind if I call him a Martian?
are you kidding???? He is a great candidate, has a good full head of hair… so.we won’t mention the atrocities he has committed. Do you see how ridiculous that sounds?
Mr. Arruda, you have continued the conversation about blunders made by our elected officials, by citing “hearsay, or …rumors (typical Kauai), or from fictional novels of incidents from 23 years ago.”
Once again you have given those with accurate memories and critical thinking skills an opportunity to comment about REAL (not fake) NEWS.
“KPD Blues” should be required reading for all Kauai residents. It is not fictional. It is accurate, truthful. and insightful. If it was inaccurate the author and publisher would have suffered a defamatory lawsuit from those named in this book. That never happened. OK, so Mel Rapozo was not the ONLY police officer involved in the Monica Alves scandal, which resulted in a settlement by the County with Alves for $250,000. He is, however, the only one who is holding public office here. Tell you what…if Mel publicly acknowledges his screw-up at the age of 30 and is willing to donate just $50,000 of his salary to repay county taxpayers, I’ll re-consider who I intend to vote for.
When Ross Kagawa admits his racist public comments were just that, renounces them, and pledges to treat all residents fairly without considering their race, I’ll re-consider who I intend to vote for.
Instead of feeling ashamed when you read critical, informed comments by concerned citizens, feel grateful that there are those of us who are willing to question authority.
Good points kauai boy…. Mr. Arruda put your address out there and I’ll send you an e-mail of proof of just how predjudice mr. Kagawa is. You would be shocked at his comments sent directly to my e-mail concerning a letter that I wrote to the mayor and all council members. Like kauai boy said we are not afraid to question authority when it needs it. If I was to send it to the forum of letters to the editor, the outrageousness of his behavior would end any chance of his being re-elected for any public office period.
