HANALEI — This year’s island champions have secured their berths at the state regatta next month.
The Kauai Outrigger Association Championships took place Saturday in Hanalei Bay.
“The season went really well this year, even though it was a slow start with some of the races because of the floods. Two of the North Shore clubs got impacted,” said Dana Miyake, KOA race director. “We canceled a couple of regattas to have a smaller racing season because we were doing a lot of damage control. But overall, we started to pick up momentum from the first regatta to the island championships.”
The lane drawings for the Hawaii Canoe Racing Association State Championship regatta is Saturday on Oahu. The state regatta will be on Aug. 4 on Oahu.
Hanalei Canoe Club won the AAA division (18+ crews) with 204 points. Puuwai was second with 195.
Hanalei mens coach Adam Roversi said the club showed some tenacity, considering it is still recovering from the flooding that damaged Kauai’s North Shore in mid-April.
“We’ve probably lost a third of our members from before the flood, with people that live in Haena and Wainiha. But even despite that, we were able to win the regatta today. So (we showed) some perseverance.”
Miyake recalled the damage suffered by KOA’s two North Shore clubs — Hanalei and Namolokama.
“I’d say the hardest thing for us, the association, was actually seeing the loss. Hanalei had nine canoes damaged … and Namolokama had five or six canoes which were damaged,” she said. “Just seeing them in pieces — a couple of them were in the rocks and we had to retrieve them, and seeing them not salvageable at all — it was a huge impact. It was very depressing.”
Niumalu Canoe Club won the AA division (9-17 crews) with 134 points. In second was Kilohana with 132, and in third was Kaiola with 114.
Kukuiula won the A division (8 crews or less) with 51 points. West Kauai was second with 29 points.
Kilohana Canoe Club won the Na Opio (keiki divisions) title with 132 points. Puuwai was second with 106 points, and Niumalu was third with 103.
“They did good. They just worked hard and paddled hard,” said Kaina Makua, Kilohana Na Opio coach. “Nothing out of the ordinary. … Actually, I would really like to say hats off to Niumalu. They were really good. Their older kids looked sharp. But for our kids, yeah, they did good.”
