POIPU — A woman died at Poipu Beach Monday morning while snorkeling.
The Kauai Police Department reports that Alicia Snakard, 80, of Connecticut, was snorkeling in the shallow waters east of the tombolo at Poipu Beach about 10:45 a.m., with the assistance of a woman who was part of her family’s group.
While Snakard was in the water, police say she was seen as unresponsive and was brought to the shore by the woman. Lifeguards administered CPR.
Soon after Snakard was brought to shore, firefighters and medics arrived, continuing resuscitation efforts. She was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death. Representatives from Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, assisted Snakard’s family.
