KAPAA — In a matchup of local clubs, Kaulupono won on the opening day of the tenth annual Kauai Hoops Classic.
Kaulupono defeated Kauai Ballers, 52-44, in a 12th grade girls game Thursday afternoon at the Bernice Hundley Gym at Kapaa High School.
The Kauai Hoops Classic is hosting games at three sites around Kauai — Kapaa High School, Kauai High School and Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Monique Lorenzo led the Kaulupono win with 12 points. Kaye Serapio scored nine, and Braelyn Cayaban and Hazel Serapio each scored eight points.
Kauai Ballers’ Jaliyah Casem led the team with 13 points. Hailey Overmyer contributed eight points.
In a ninth grade boys game, Team Supreme of Oahu bested Kauai’s Westside Basketball in overtime, 32-27.
Team Supreme’s Jalen Henry scored four of the team’s eight points in OT. He ended with seven points. Kyan Montemayor led the team with 11 points.
Westside’s Mayson Broyles was the team’s leading scorer with seven points. Hunter Furtado-Oligo had six points.
A ninth grade girls match between Lady Phenom and the Kauai Ballers opened the day at Kapaa High.
Lady Phenom’s Hiilani Arai scored 10 points, and Kreyajan Pahukoa had seven points and the team defeated Kauai Ballers, 45-11.
Overmyer had four points, and Hina Grance had three points for Kauai Ballers.
Full results were not available by press time.
The tournament continues today in at Kapaa and Kauai high schools and Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
