PUHI — Athena Alexander recently graduated from Island School and is already spreading her wings to see what the world has to offer, said MaBel Fujiuchi of the Zonta Club of Kauai.
Alexander is one of three $2,000 scholarship recipients, but her mother Mary accepted the award on her behalf Thursday during the club’s monthly meeting at the Regency at Puakea.
She was joined by Tia Takasaki and Shaylin Silva.
“Athena can tell us about the various schools on the island,” Fujiuchi said. “She attended St. Catherine School in Kapaa, King Kaumualii Elementary School and Kapaa Middle School before graduating from Island School just a few days ago.”
Alexander will attend the California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks and major in communications; she plans to pursue a career in advertising and public relations.
Takasaki received the Zonta Club of Kauai/Marge Akana Scholarship. She will play softball and volleyball at Walla Walla College in Washington. The Kapaa High graduate, who received accolades in both sports during high school, plans to become a nurse anesthetist and hopes to return to Kauai to work.
Silva is a graduate of Kapaa High and will attend Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, where she will study optometry and hopes to return to Kauai.
Silva, who maintained a 3.9 grade-point average in high school, was the third recipient of the Zonta Club of Kauai/Marge Akana scholarship.
“We wish you all success,” Fujiuchi said. “We want you to reach your goals, and we want you to come back home.”
