LIHUE — Hawaii gas prices increased for the eighth week throughout the islands, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch. Last week’s statewide average price was $3.70 a gallon, which was 3 cents more than the previous Thursday, 11 cents higher than a month ago and 65 cents more than a year ago, according to GasPrices.AAA.com.

Lihue’s average price for regular was $3.87, which was 4 cents higher than the previous Thursday, 13 cents higher than on that date last month and 56 cents more than a year ago.
“The summer travel season is upon us and millions of Americans will be relaxing at beaches and exploring cities across the country,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager. “Honolulu and Maui have grown in popularity as destinations compared with last summer. In fact, Honolulu is the No. 2 destination this year based on AAA Travel bookings for June 1 to Aug. 15. Orlando retained its top spot as the most visited travel destination this year.”
In Honolulu, the average price for regular was $3.58, a full 3 cents higher than the previous Thursday, 12 cents higher than on that date a month ago and 68 cents higher than last year at this time. The Hilo average price was $3.71, which was 3 cents higher than the previous Thursday, 6 cents more than on that date last month and 69 cents higher than on that date a year ago.
In Kahului and Wailuku, the average price was $4.
So much for that tax cut
Many other countries pay well over 6 or 10 dollars per gallon. When gas hits 5 bucks a gallon here I expect to see plenty big trucks and SUVs on the side of the road with “for sale” signs in them.
