KAPAA — The Rev. Dr. Jeff Wilson, professor of Buddhist studies in the Department of Religion at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, will be presenting a lecture on Shinran, the 13th-century founder of the Hongwanji Buddhist tradition, on May 31 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Kapaa Hongwanji Mission.
KAPAA — The Rev. Dr. Jeff Wilson, professor of Buddhist studies in the Department of Religion at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, will be presenting a lecture on Shinran, the 13th-century founder of the Hongwanji Buddhist tradition, on May 31 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Kapaa Hongwanji Mission.
Admission is $10 per person, and registration forms can be turned in to any of the Hongwanji temples at Kapaa, Lihue or West Kauai by May 27. Registration will also be accepted at the door.
Shinran is today seen as a respected and revered Buddhist monk. During his lifetime, he was a tradition-breaker whose radical teachings had profound implications for both religion and society.
Wilson is a professor of religious studies and East Asian studies at Renison University College. He is the author of “Buddhism of the Heart: Reflections on Shin Buddhism and Inner Togetherness,” and a number of other books. He is an ordained minister in the Nishi Hongwanji tradition.
