HANAPEPE — Kauai Fire Department Battalion Chief Jason Ornellas spent his day in the Emergency Operating Center involved with disaster relief efforts Saturday.
But he made time to join his wife Maryann at the Hanapepe soccer fields to participate in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life that opened with the Survivors’ Reception and the Survivors’ Lap to the tune of applause from the growing number of team supporters cheering the appearance of cancer survivors.
The Relay For Life is the signature fundraising and awareness event for the American Cancer Society, offering everyone an opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who lost their fight against cancer, and fight for a world free from cancer.
Support comes in many forms, as “Game Changers” offered food, games and knickknacks to brighten the evening around the hope circle created by luminaria remembering people’s fight against cancer.
