LIHUE — If you’re excited about the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you may want to sign up to participate in an upcoming tournament.
For those who’d just like to watch the tournament and purchase their tickets at the door, they’ll be supporting Kauai’s flood relief efforts.
The Kauai Spring Open, part of the Hawaii Triple Crown of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, will take place May 12 at Kauai High School. Tournament formats will be single elimination for adults and double elimination for kids.
From the Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition, the made from tickets sold at the door, will be donated to Kauai’s flood victims, said event coordinator Romolo Barros.
“Besides the government, I think everybody can help a little bit,” Barros said. “It would go a long ways to help the people. … I wanted to make a contribution to all the people that lost everything.”
For Barros, helping Kauai’s victims is motivated from being a flood victim himself on Oahu.
“I live in Hawaii Kai on the East side of Oahu. My house got flooded, but I got very lucky it didn’t go inside of my house,” Barros said. “I didn’t have to move to clean, but it went in my garage and my car, my yard and the mats that I have. You never know hard it hits you when it hits you in your own home.”
Tickets at the door will cost $10 for adults and $5 for children.
The competition is scheduled to begin 10 a.m.
Registration for competitors is open. Those who wish to enter can do so at www.hawaiitriplecrown.com. Deadline to enter is May 9.
During early registration through April 29, the entry fee is $70 for adults and $50 for kids. The after deadline cost is $80 for adults and $60 for kids.
Registration costs for entrants who sign up on May 9 is $90 for adults and $70 for kids. For every additional division entered, an additional $10 will be added.
Weigh-ins the morning of the event are scheduled for 8:30-9:30 a.m. for the child participants and 9:30-11:30 a.m. for adults participants.
Last year, a total of 150 adults and children participated in the event, held at Kauai High School.
