Herman Santos and Jaden Waldman were tied 11-11 in the third period Saturday during the first tournament of the 2018 Kauai USAW/KPAL spring wrestling season at the Kapaa High School cafeteria.
As the seconds ticked down, Santos, a Kapaa Middle School student, made his move to take the match from Waldman, finishing third in the 100-112 pound division below Waimea High School’s Kylen Aana and Ashlyn Agena.
Hosted by the Warrior Wrestling club and the Kauai Police Activities League, the match was the first of six scheduled tournaments for the spring season.
Mac Pigott said the tournament is open to all ages with the focus of the season being to provide future and current KIF wrestlers opportunities to train, compete, and improve on their high school wrestling.
Saturday’s turnout was considered good with wrestlers ranging in age from 6 through 16 years old weighing in from 50 to 150 pounds in five age and weight brackets.
“These tournaments are for all levels of wrestling,” Pigott said. “Whether you are a returning Hawaii High School Athletic Association state placer, or a beginner, we can usually get some good pairings.”
Wrestling practice takes place at the Westside Wrestling Club on Tuesday and Thursday, and on the Eastside at the Kapaa KPAL center on Wednesday and Friday.
The next wrestling tournament for the spring season is Saturday at the Waimea High School gym with weigh-in starting at 8 a.m. and wrestling to start at 9:30 a.m.
