LIHUE — Leipua Kaui led Kapaa High School to a 12-0 win over Kauai High School on Monday afternoon at the Kauai Interscholastic Federation softball contest that was put on hold after the lights gave out March 21 at the Isenberg Park.
Kapaa resumed play leading 3-0 in the third inning.
Leipua went the distance on the mound, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out nine Red Raider batters and walking none.
Offensively, Leipua finished with a pair of home runs, and a double, driving in five runs and scored three times as the Warrior wahine piled up 12 runs on 10 hits. Tia Takasaki finished with a double and two singles, scoring twice and driving in two runs.
Tiani Kaui doubled and scored once, Shanayah Marshal singled and marked a pair of RBI, Kendra Kupihea had no hits but marked an RBI, and Sabrina Telles-Kelekoma and Shailee Telles-Kelekoma each singled.
Kauai retook the diamond with Justice Funamura-Sasil taking the mound after Dreanalyn Tafiti suffered a season-ending injury against Waimea. Funamura-Sasil gave up eight runs on eight hits, including one home run to Leipua in the fourth inning. She also walked a Kapaa batter while striking out none.
Prior to the lights fading on March 21, Tafiti was on the mound and allowed three runs on three hits while walking two and hitting one batter.
Offensively, Kauai got a single from Funamura-Sasil, bunt singles from Stephanie Kanakaole-L0pes and Kelley Albarado-Planas and a single from Neychelle Wada-Ballesteros.
Kauai next opens Round 2 of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation softball season by hosting Waimea in a single game Wednesday afternoon starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Isenberg Field. This was originally scheduled as a night game, but due to problems with the light, the game will start at 3:30 p.m.
Kapaa enjoys a bye until Saturday when they face Waimea in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. at the Waimea Canyon Park.
