Happy birthday to Waimea High School’s Jacelyn Palacio-Ragragola who celebrated her birthday Thursday at the Rotary Track and qualifying meet at Vidinha Stadium. Mahalo to Coach Dave Walker (he’s a West Kauai Rotarian) who collaborated with the Department of Parks and Recreation to get the marks on the long jump track re-done (Dan Ahuna said he was so happy to see the work, he had to hug the Rotarians).

Coach Dave said when the Rotary Meet started in 1946, everything was held in Kekaha at H.P. Faye Park, and there were huge crowds because no one had television sets yet. It was nice to see the familiar coaching faces like Calvin Paleka, Coach Basil Scott, Richard Matsumoto and Chelsea Smith-Wishard (congratulations on the new baby).
Billy DeCosta said his son and a group of guys from the Kauai Christian Fellowship just returned from a trip to Mexico where they helped build houses, scrounge for food, and do other humanitarian service with the church group.
Melanie Okamoto said the county’s age group track meet is this weekend with the athletes to the fifth-grade performing Saturday and the middle-school-age group performing today (Happy Hanamatsuri — the meet starts at 11 a.m.).
