LIHUE — Councilmembers Derek Kawakami and Arryl Kaneshiro will ask the County Council to consider amending Chapter 5A, County Code 1987 relating to real property taxes at this week’s meeting.
They’ll be asking for a tax exemption to be considered for residential homeowners who install an automatic fire suppression system, which meets minimum design specifications.
The emergency management administrator also will request the council’s approval on accepting $650,000 from the state of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency Retrofit Program to retrofit the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center gymnasium and Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall for emergency shelter purposes.
And the county attorney will ask the council for authority to spend up to $25,000 for special counsel services.
If approved, the funding will be used to represent the County of Kauai in pursuing opioid litigation against the manufacturers and distributors of opioid pain medications and related matters.
Wednesday’s meeting is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at the Historic County Building.

Do they actually trust the county council? Joanne Yukimura for mayor again, proved her point. One rule, one law. No term limits. This is not a legitimate council. Who would be interested in them?
