KAUAI — April 15 through April 21 Kauai will be celebrating Volunteer Week with seven days of service across each of Kauai’s mokus.
The week of service is inspired by National Volunteer Week, and is partnered with the statewide Volunteer Week Hawaii Campaign, which aims to celebrate the impact of volunteer service across Hawaii.
The second year of this annual event includes volunteer projects with a variety of organizations across the island including Malama Hule‘ia, Kumano I Ke Ala, Kokee Resource Conservation Program, Surfrider, and The Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park.
State Rep. Nadine Nakamura and Senate President Ron Kouchi introduced companion resolutions to officially recognize Volunteer Week in the state of Hawaii. These passed in 2017 to support the week this year, and a new set of resolutions is currently making its way through committees.
Kauai’s schedule of service projects includes:
• April 15 – Puna: Malama Hule‘ia
• April 16 – Kona: Malama Waimea River Clean-Up
• April 17 – Napali: Invasive species removal at Kokee State Park
• April 18 – Ko‘olau: Surfrider Kauai Net Patrol and beach clean-up
• April 19 – Kona: Ke Kula Ni‘ihau o Kekaha school garden
• April 20 – Halele‘a: Malama Kauai Community Farm
• April 21- Puna: The Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Park
To celebrate the completed week of service, participants are invited to a celebratory Earth Day Community Work Day, and lunch following, with The Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Park on Saturday, April 21, at the main pavilion at Lydgate Beach Park.
The public is encouraged to participate, and asked to RSVP to the events they’ll be attending. Sun protection, a reusable water bottle, and protective clothing appropriate for each activity is recommended. Groups and businesses are invited to consider “adopting an event,” to bring their teams together for teambuilding and a way to give back to their local community.
