Kauai students were finalists in the 15th annual ‘Olelo Youth Xchange Statewide Student Video Competition presented by Sony. The 2018 finalists from more than 980 submissions were announced, a record number for the state’s oldest and largest contest of its type.
The Youth Xchange was developed to help give island keiki a voice to tell stories in a variety of video formats and about subjects that are meaningful to them.
The finalist videos were created by students who attend a program-record 100 public, charter and private schools all across Oahu, Hawaii Island, Kauai and Maui counties.
This year, Youth Xchange videos competed in 16 categories. The five broad categories include mini-documentary, public service announcement, short, expert and junior
expert.
Kauai finalists include videos by Kauai High School’s “Forest Protection” and Hawaii Technology Academy’s “Water Is Essential.” Chiefess Middle School created three videos that advanced to the final, including the PSA “Disconnect,” as well as “A Day in the Forest” and “Change It Up and Walk to School.”
Judges selected finalists based on subject impact and technical production. These panels included local news media, film-making professionals and subject experts.
High-definition Sony digital video cameras will be awarded to the winning schools in each of the divisional categories on April 26 at the Awards Gala at the Hawaii Convention Center.
The live cablecast of the ‘Olelo Youth Xchange Awards Gala will air April 26 starting at 10:30 a.m. on Channel 49, as well as streamed live at www.olelo/49.
