KAPAA — Kapaa High School’s varsity softball team won both games of Saturday’s doubleheader at home against Kauai High School.
The Warrior wahine beat the Red Raiders in the first game, 10-2, and in the second game, 13-2.
In the first game, Kapaa (3-2 KIF) took a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Warriors then scored five runs in the fifth to pad its lead. Designated player Shaylin Rivera hit a two-RBI triple to center field to score runners Kendra Kupihea and Shanayah Marshall, who both got reached first on back-to-back singles.
Later on, outfielder Kanoe Kawamura hit an infield RBI single to score Rivera. Starting pitcher Leipua Kaui hit an RBI single to left field to score Kawamura from second. Then, second baseman Tiani Kaui hit an RBI double to left to score Leipua Kaui.
Kauai (0-4 KIF) got its first run in the third inning. Red Raiders starting pitcher Dreanalyn Tafiti hit an RBI double to left center field to score runner Kyra Hirokane.
In the fourth inning, Red Raiders outfielder Kayla Blackstad hit an RBI double to left field.
Kapaa totaled 10 runs on 12 hits, left eight runners on base and recorded one error. Leipua Kaui was 2-2, with two singles, reached twice on errors and scored three runs. Kawamura was 2-4 with two singles and scored two runs.
Kauai had two runs on eight hits, left six runners on and recorded four errors. Tafiti was 2-3 with a double and a single.
In the second game, Kapaa scored seven runs in the second inning en route to the 13-2 final score. Play ended in the fifth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Kapaa got its 13 runs on 15 hits and had one error. Kauai got two runs on eight hits and recorded six errors.
Prior games that were postponed need to be made up before the season’s first round ends. A scheduled game between Kauai and Waimea (4-1 KIF) was canceled because of unfavorable field conditions due to weather.
Also, a game between Kapaa and Kauai was postponed during play because of faulty stadium lights. At the time of stoppage, Kapaa lead Kauai, 3-0, in the top of the third inning.
Schedules for the makeup games are to be determined.
