HANAPEPE — Kapaa High School’s varsity baseball team swept Waimea High School in a doubleheader Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
The Warriors beat the Menehune in the first game, 8-1, and in the second game, 6-3.
In the first game of Saturday’s twin bill, Warriors starting pitcher Noa Cardinez threw a one-hit complete game.
In seven innings, Cardinez had five strikeouts, three walks and three hit batsmen.
With a 2-1 lead, Kapaa (3-1 KIF) scored four runs in the fifth inning to further extend its lead. Cardinez scored first on an error. Then with a runner on second, Warriors junior catcher Ka’eo Kamau hit an RBI single to center field.
Later in the inning, freshman courtesy runner Raimana Huddy — running for Kamau — scored on another Menehune error. Then Warriors sophomore pinch hitter Caden Shimabukuro hit an RBI single to the shortstop for the fourth run.
Kapaa scored two more times in the sixth inning on three consecutive doubles. Huddy and senior outfielder Kaenen Lacaden each had an RBI double.
Waimea (0-4 KIF) got its one run in the second inning. Menehune second baseman Deiton Otoman hit a single to right field. Then on an error in the outfield, outfielder Kaikoa Perreira-
Alquiza scored.
Perreira-Alquiza reached first on a fielder’s choice.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Cardinez faced three batters and got them all out with a strikeout, a groundout and a strikeout.
Kapaa got its eight runs on 11 hits, left seven runners on base and recorded one error. Kamau was 2-4 batting with two singles. Huddy, running for Kamau, scored two runs. Cardinez was the winning pitcher.
Waimea got one run on one hit, left two runners on and recorded four errors. Otoman, who accounted for Waimea’s one hit, was 1-2 with a single.
Menehune relief pitcher Reydan Rull took the loss for Waimea. He relieved started Maximus Ham in the second inning. In 5 1/3 innings, Rull had three strikeouts.
Kapaa is scheduled to host Kauai High School (3-1 KIF) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Before the season’s first round concludes, two postponed games need to be made up — a game between Kapaa and Waimea was never played, and a game between Waimea and Kauai was put off during the fifth inning. Make-up dates are to be determined.
