MINNEAPOLIS — The third day of the NCAA Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center produced two top-25 finishes for the University of Hawaii men’s swimming and diving squad.
Senior Metin Aydin notched the best finish of the day for UH at No. 19 in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 46.06. His finishing time eclipsed his qualifying time of 46.76 a time he registered at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Feb. 16. His No.19 placement was the same position he finished last season in the NCAA Championships, narrowly missing an opportunity in the finals.
In his first event of the championships, sophomore Olli Kokko notched a No. 21 finish in the 100-yard breaststroke at 52.89. Same as Metin, Kokko qualified for the championships after his performance in the MPSF Championships with a time of 53.14, breaking his mark in the championship prelims.
Junior Johan Sandell concluded his second day of competition at No. 31 in the three-meter dive. Sandell jumped up 10 spots from his finish a year ago, as he placed No. 41 in the 2017 championships.
All three will compete on the final day of the championships beginning tomorrow at 6 a.m. HT. Aydin will go in the 200-yard backstroke, Kokko in the 200-yard breaststroke and Sandell in the platform dive.
