KALAHEO — Hawaii-based handcrafted shave ice company, The Fresh Shave, has taken yet another step toward becoming environmentally friendly.
The company with a store in Kalaheo has been serving paper cups and wooden spoons since 2014, and starting Monday, it will eliminate the use of all single-use plastics with the addition of paper straws starting with their original location on Kauai.
The Fresh Shave has made environmentally conscious practices a priority and built this focus into the company core values. In 2017, The Fresh Shave was designated a Platinum Level Ocean Friendly Restaurant by the Surfrider Foundation.
“The Fresh Shave believes in doing our part to help protect our environment,” said co-owner, Priscilla Soule. “As the company grows, achieving a plastic-free customer experience has been an important goal of ours.”
After months of research and testing, the owners selected a paper straw made in the United States from sustainably-managed forests. The Fresh Shave expects to substitute nearly 36,000 plastic straws per year in Kauai alone.
