KAPAA — Kapaa and Waimea high schools’ varsity softball teams split Saturday’s doubleheader at Kapaa High School.
Waimea won the opening game, 5-2, and Kapaa won Saturday’s second game, 9-3.
In the first contest, Waimea (1-1 KIF) scored three runs in the first inning.
With runners on first and second base, Menehune infielder Starlynn Ripley hit an RBI single to right field. An errant throw from the outfield scored Waimea’s second run and advanced Ripley to second base.
In the ensuing at bat, infielder Kieren Henderson hit an RBI single to score Ripley from second.
In the third inning, Menehune outfielder Makeyah Wisneski hit an RBI triple to right field to score the runner from second. In the sixth, catcher Daleyah Campos-Banasihan hit a sacrifice grounder to score the runner from third.
Kapaa (1-1 KIF) got its two runs in the fourth inning. Warriors outfielder Ini Marshall hit a sacrifice bunt to score the runner from third. In the following at bat with the bases loaded, designated player Shaylin Rivera drew a walk to plate the team’s second run.
Waimea got its five runs on five hits, left nine runners on base and recorded one error. Menehune starting pitcher Shandalyn Kuhlmann was the winning pitcher. She threw all nine innings and got two strikeouts.
Kapaa totaled two runs on four hits, left nine runners on base and had two errors. Marshall — who started as the starting pitcher and moved to the outfield after being relieved in the first inning after facing six batters — took the loss for Kapaa.
In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Kapaa took a 9-0 lead into the last inning.
The Warriors scored two runs in the second inning. Marshall and infielder Kendra Kupihea both scored on an errant throw from the catcher throwing to first base.
Kapaa scored four more in the fourth. With runners on first and second and with two outs, Warriors infielder Tiani Kaui hit an RBI single to plate the first run.
An errant throw from the outfielder allowed Kapaa to scored another run and Kaui advanced to second. Kaui went to score a run on another Menehune error. Later in the inning infielder Tia Takasaki hit an RBI single to extend Kapaa’s lead to 6-0.
In the fifth inning, Kapaa extended its lead to nine runs. Marshall hit a 2-RBI triple to right field. In the ensuing at bat, designated player Krisshan Lopez reached first base on an errant throw and Marshall scored a run on the play.
Waimea got on the board in the final inning. Wisneski hit an RBI double, Maegan Soares hit an RBI single and Jenessa Freitas reached first base on an error to score one run.
Down to the last out, Menehune catcher Aliyah Nordmeier-Kanahele hit a grounder to the third baseman for the final out.
Kapaa got nine runs on seven hits, left five runners on base and had four errors. Warriors starting pitcher Leipua Kaui got the win. Leipua Kaui threw all seven innings — throwing six shutout innings — and got five strikeouts. She also pitched for most of Saturday’s first game.
Waimea totaled three runs on four hits, left five runners on and recorded six errors. Kuhlmann also started the second game took the loss for Waimea. She went 4 2/3 innings and got one strikeout.
Kapaa will against Kauai High School (0-0 KIF) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Isenberg Park in Lihue. Waimea will play Kauai for a doubleheader Saturday at Isenberg Park. The first game is scheduled for 10 a.m.
