Feladis ‘Val’ Villanueva
Feladis “Val” Villanueva of Kapaa passed away in Wilcox Medical Center on March 10, 2018, at the age of 87. He was born in Hanalei on May 3, 1930. A veteran of the U.S. Army in the Korean War and a recipient of a Purple Heart medal, he was affectionately known as “Slugger.” He resided on Oahu for nearly 50 years. He retired from real estate sales and moved to Kauai in 1997.
He was preceded in death by parents Felix Villanueva and Maria Pablo, and brothers Alberto, Peren and Hiraldo.
He is survived by wife Anastacia “Ann” Villanueva, children Stephen Villanueva, Susan (Randy) Oshita, Matthew Villanueva, Valerie (Matthew) Murphy, Christine (John) Wilcox, Lisa (Arthur Betos) Villanueva, Roman Villanueva and Stacey (Brian) Sweeney; grandchildren Ray Adam, Joseph, Bryson, Jenesis, Natalie, Brooke, Dustin, Austin, Keith, Jessica, Micah, Kierstyn, Malia, Mitchell, Tabitha, Samantha and Blake; great-grandchildren Kyle, Braydan, Kaylen, Amber, Cheydan, Cruz, Lana, Bronx, Rider-Lei and Ease; brother William (Lolita) Villanueva, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a devout member of St. Catherine parish in Kapaa, where he was an avid lector and volunteered with the church food pantry.
His favorite pastimes were playing cards, fishing, going to the movies and socializing with friends. Like many of his buddies, he enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 14, at St. Catherine church, with viewing from 8 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Kauai Veterans Cemetery.
Kauai Memorial Gardens &Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Loretta Therese Blackstad
Loretta Therese Blackstad, born Oct. 11, 1947, in Lihue, passed on Feb. 20, 2018, at Straub Hospital at the age of 70. She was a retired hairdresser and an office manager.
She was preceded in death by parents Manuel and Mae Andrade.
She is survived by husband Ronald A Blackstasd, sons Kevin J. (Adrianne), Kris K. and Kyle R. (Wailana), grandchildren Kira, Koby, Kelly, Kannen, Kahanu, and Wehilani, sisters Joyce (Anthony) Silva and Pat (Howard) Naleimaile, brothers Manuel (Phyllis) and Michael (Sherry) Andrade, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 17, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo, with visitation from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. with church service to follow.
The family requests casual attire. Flowers and lei are welcome, but the family requests no wreaths.
Flora Remata
Flora Remata, 82, of Lihue, passed away on March 10, 2018, in Lihue.
She was born on Oct. 28, 1935, on Kauai.
She was preceded in death by father Isaac Luis and mother Victoria Luis.
She is survived by husband Doric Remata of Lihue, sons Nathan (Lynn) Remata of Manoa, Oahu, Emery Remata of Lawai, Vince Remata of Lihue, Mark (Denise) Remata of Pearl City, Oahu, daughters Allyson (Lance) Okamoto, Joni (Jr.) Savusa of Ewa Beach, Oahu, and grandchildren Rayna Remata, Kacie Remata, Nicholas Perreira, Cale Okamoto, Harper Okamoto and Jamie Okamoto, brother Ted Luis of Chicago, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephew and cousins.
Services will be held on March 24, at Garden Island Mortuary chapel in Lawai. Visitation with the family from 3 to 4 p.m., with service to begin at 4 p.m.
The family suggests casual attire.
