ANAHOLA —The eighth annual Prince Kuhio Day Celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Anahola Beach Park.
Festivities will honor Prince Kuhio’s legacy and feature music, food, crafts and hula performances. It is free.
Kupuna Alroy Nalei Enos will also be honored for his contributions as a leader and strong advocate, for the Native Hawaiian people.
“As a life long educator, coach, and spiritual leader Kupuna Enos has made a tremendous impact for the good in the lives of countless individuals and families in Anahola and on the island of Kauai,” according to a press release.
Prince Kuhio was born on the South Shore of Kauai on March 26, 1871. His birthday is celebrated as a Hawaii state holiday.
Prince Kuhio was the great-grandson of Kaua‘i’s last ruling chief, Kaumuali‘i, and was one of the named heirs to the Kalakaua dynasty of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
His aunt was Queen Kapi‘olani, and King David Kalakaua was his uncle. Both raised him and his brothers as successors to the throne. Prince Kuhio outlived the monarchy and chose to help his people by serving in the new government.
Following the overthrow of the monarchy, he led an unsuccessful attempt at regaining power for Queen Lili‘uokalani, Kuhio’s sister. He was briefly imprisoned for treason towards the Republic of Hawai‘i for the attempt.
Prince Kuhio also is remembered as the first Hawaiian representative elected to the U.S. Congress, where he served for 20 years.
His legacy is the establishment of the Order of Kamehameha, the Kaumuali‘i chapter being the caretakers of the current Prince Kuhio Park, situated close to the prince’s birthplace in Poipu.
He also established the Chiefs of Hawai‘i, the Hawaiian Civic Clubs, national parks on Maui and the Big Island and the Hawaiian Homes Commission (in 1921, following 10 years of lobbying).
The protocol ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.
1871? Did he know who King David Kalakaua was? No monarchy. Just Hawaiians.
1887, on Oahu the bayonet constitution formed. Read on it. Was Prince Kuhio involved in this ordeal with the Hawaiian league? Separate islands. Also by this time Clause Spreckles started a sugar plantation on Kaua’i. Did they make note of this studying Hawaiian history? Not that far ahead.
There was no unified Hawai’i. I.e. John John Florence carrying the Hawaiian flag at the Billabong Pipeline Masters on Oahu. (Tell me why?)
Anyway, I enjoy Ho’olaulea (block party) in Waikiki and downtown on Oahu when it’s held. This is a good event for Hawai’i. Everyone is happy.
