The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Kauai, due to heavy rains occurring over the island. The warning may be extended, dropped or modified as conditions develop.
Kuhio Highway in the vicinity of the Hanalei Bridge is closed until further notice due to flooding. A flash flood watch remains in effect for Kauai.
The American Red Cross is in the process of opening a shelter at Hanalei Elementary School.
The state Department of Transportation reports that a landslide has occurred in Wainiha, near mile marker 5, and officials are currently responding to the scene.
The Department of Education has announced that Hanalei Elementary School is closed to students today.
The Kalalau Trail remains closed until further notice by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The county has closed green waste disposal operations at all refuse transfer stations except the Kekaha Landfill, which is open for residential services only. The Hanapēpē refuse transfer station is also not accepting tires, scrap metal and appliances.
A flash flood warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads, and low-lying areas. Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. The warning may be extended, dropped or modified as conditions develop.
Ponding, low visibility and other hazardous driving conditions are expected. If you must drive, please do so with extreme caution.
