LIHUE — Kauai High School’s varsity baseball team won the 2018 Kauai Interscholastic Federation season opener Saturday afternoon.
Kauai High defeated Waimea High School, 15-4, in the first game of a doubleheader at Vidinha Stadium.
The Red Raiders opened with an 8-0 lead by the end of the second inning. Kauai scored six runs in the bottom of the second off two hits and drew four walks and a hit-by-pitch.
Kauai then scored six more runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead to double-digits on three hits and drew three walks and two hit-by-pitches. Red Raiders infielder Tyler Oshima had a 2-RBI double in the inning.
Waimea scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings. In the third, Menehune infielder Deiton Otoman had an RBI single, and infielder Kaikoa Perreira-Alquiza scored on an error.
In the fourth, Perreira-Alquiza had an RBI single and pitcher Maximus Ham hit a sacrifice fly to left field for an RBI.
Down, 15-4, in the top of the fifth with two outs and a runner at first base, Menehune catcher Noah Bermudez struck out swinging to end the game on a 10-run mercy rule.
Kauai got its 15 runs on eight hits, left five runners on base and recorded two errors. Oshima was 2-2 with a double, three RBIs and two walks and scored three runs. Red Raiders outfielder Blake Probasco was 2-2 with a double, three RBIs, one walk and scored one run.
Relief pitcher Taylor Apilado, who started the game as an infielder, was the winning pitcher. He came in the third inning to relieve starting pitcher Jacob Borerro and threw the rest of the game. He tallied one strikeout.
Waimea got four runs on four hits, left five runners on and had one error. Menehune infielder Keaka Wisneski was 2-2 with a couple of singles and a walk.
Ham, who started the game and then came back in, took the loss.
