LIHUE — A single yellow rose has been a favorite Zonta symble for decades.
It is used to adorn a number of Zonta items, including stationary, clothing, and has been used in a number of charter and anniversary celebrations, said Edie Ignacio-Neumiller.
“But the Zonta Rose is more than just a pretty flower,” she said.
Jeannette Bonilla, president of the Zonta Club of Kauai, presented each member of the club with a yellow rose Thursday during the club’s normal meeting date at the Regency at Puakea.
“We’re celebrating the Zonta Rose Day which falls on March 8,” Bonilla said.
This date also coincides with International Women’s Day which is a global celebration of the progress made toward achieving real equality for women in all aspects of life, she added.
“This day is an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of those ahead of us, and to prepare for the challenges which lie ahead as Zonta Club International continues to strengthen efforts to improve the lives of women around the world,” Bonilla said.
The Zonta Club of Kauai has a mission of empowering women through service and advocacy.
Zontian MaBel Fujiuchi was honored for serving with the Zonta Club of Kauai for 35 years, making her the third longest-serving member of the club.
“I didn’t realize it until now,” said Dimples Kano. “Tomorrow, Friday, marks the exact date I joined the Zonta Club 45 years ago. I don’t know how I became friends with Betty Bell, but she is the longest-serving member with 50 years of service. And then, there’s Mabel.”
