WAINIHA — State Department of Transportation Kauai District Highways Division staff have worked since early Friday to clear mud and rock debris from landslides caused by heavy rains that blocked Kuhio Highway between Wainiha and Lumahai.
An emergency access route on the makai (ocean) side of the highway was cleared to allow emergency services access to the communities on the other side of the landslide Friday night. That route remained clear to alternating traffic on a limited basis Saturday.
Crews hope to finish scope scaling and debris cleanup today.
Work remaining includes clearing of mud and rocks from the landslides, washing down the road, and mitigation work to reduce the likelihood of another landslide cutting off the road.
