Hanalei School was closed and, as a precaution, students attending Kapaa Middle and Kapaa High School who reside in Hanalei, Wainiha and Haena were also released early.
“The health and safety of our students is of the upmost priority,” stated a news release issued by state Department of Education Complex Area Superintendent William Arakaki.
Hanalei students residing in Princeville were released by school staff and picked up by parents/guardians at a designated area at the Princeville Public Library. Those living in Hanalei, Wainiha and Haena were picked up at the school cafeteria.
Students attending Kapaa Middle and Kapaa High School who reside in Hanalei, Wainiha and Haena were bused to their normal drop-off sites.
State Parks closed the Kalalau trailhead in Haena due to observed flash flooding of the Hanakapiai Stream.
The Kekaha Landfill was closed due to lightning and severe weather conditions at the facility.
Both will reopen when it is safe.
