North Korean Olympic delegation led by Hyon Song-wol has rocketed to celebrity status with her visit to Seoul last week to inspect venues. Hyon is one of the highest-
ranking female in North Korea who is responsible for the Samjiyeon Orchestra and the Morangbong Band, their version of K-pop group.
The South Korean media went into a frenzy snapping every photo opportunity of Hyon, and analyzed details of her fashion, hair, make-up, her choice of handbag and rare smiles.
Hyon was born in 1983 and has been rumored to be a girlfriend to Kim Jong-un and was later killed by a firing squad. Clearly she’s alive and in an influential position today.
We will be seeing more of Hyon as the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang nears. Her Samjiyeon Orchestra and Moranbong Band will be making several public appearances during the Winter Olympics in South Korea.
Hyon serves as a different face of North Korea which has strategically taken attention away from North Korea’s missile tests and other ongoing political rhetoric. Hyon is the new face of
NK-pop.
