The Kinolau O Kanaloa poster contest encourages aloha for our ocean.
The student art contest will focus on celebrating the kinolau (bodily forms) of Kanaloa (Hawaiian god of the sea) and is open to all Kauai students. The artwork will be on display at Kukui Grove Center from Feb. 9-18 at Suite E10 behind the exhibition area near DejaVu.
All entries must be postmarked by Feb. 6.
Kukui Grove is partnering with the University of Hawaii, Manoa, Hawaiinuiakea, NOAA Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, NOAA Fisheries, DLNR-Department of Aquatic Resources, Pacific Missile Range Facility, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument to design and create an educational innovation space at Kukui Grove Shopping Center.
“We are all committed to aloha kanaloa or expressing our love for the ocean in different ways,” said organizer Malia Nobrega-Olivera. “The educational innovation space at Kukui Grove Center allows us an opportunity to share our work with the community and provide a variety of programs for Kauai.”
The overarching theme for the space is “The Ocean Around Us,” with informational displays, educational activities for keiki of all ages, ohana activities, panel discussions, speaker sessions, movie screenings and more. These events promote awareness, exploration, discussion and understanding on many aspects of Kauai’s ocean environment.
“This is a great educational opportunity for our Kauai community to learn more about the various programs here,” Nobrega-Olivera said. “Each weekend the different partners will be organizing activities and programs around different topics like coral, fish and fins, whales, monk seals, etc.”
Hawaiinuiakea, the university’s indigenous knowledge school, will be leading the programming around voyaging and Kanaloa, according to Nobrega-Olivera. Consisting of the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language, Ka Papa Loi O Kanewai Cultural Garden and Native Hawaiian Student Services, the school will also be sharing information about higher education, the importance of it, and the programs and services that Hawaiinuiakea offers.
A panel of judges will pick the student art winners, and each winner will receive a prize. The name and school of each winning student will be shared on a website along with the student’s photograph. Photos of winning students will be requested after the winners are announced. All reproduction rights become the property of Hawaiinuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge and partners, and will be used for educational purposes only.
