Hikers rescued from Hanakoa Valley, Uluwehi Falls
Firefighters responded to two calls of hikers in distress on Christmas morning near Hanakoa Valley on Na Pali Coast, and at Uluwehi Falls in Wailua.
Kauai Police Department dispatchers were notified of the first incident about 10:20 a.m., when a 54-year-old male injured his back along the Kalalau Trail in Hanakoa Valley.
The man was airlifted by Rescue 3 personnel aboard Air 1 and flown to Princeville Airport, where awaiting American Medical Response medics transported him to Wilcox Medical Center.
At around noon the same day, firefighters were informed of a female who broke her ankle along the hiking trail to Uluwehi Falls.
Rescue 3 personnel aboard Air 1 departed Princeville shortly after and flew toward the Wailua River. While on scene, they located the injured woman and short-hauled her to a nearby landing area, where she was assessed by awaiting AMR medics.
