LIHUE — The county on Wednesday began enforcing new park rules following reports of excessive vandalism and complaints about suspicious activity.
Some facilities — Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall, including the parking lot and the area near the Boys &Girls Club of Hawaii, Lihue Clubhouse, Lihue County Park, and the county lawn fronting the Historic County Building — will be closed to the public from 4:30 p.m. to 7:45 a.m. daily.
Kalena Park will be closed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily.
“We’ve been experiencing chronic issues in these facilities, and community members, unfortunately, no longer feel safe there at night,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Lenny Rapozo.
According to a press release, the county parks director has the authority to close any section or part of any park facility as he “shall find reasonably necessary for the health, safety or welfare of the public.”
Kauai police will enforce the rules, the release said.
The Department of Parks and Recreation will continue the limited use of these facilities during closure times by permit, which can be obtained at any of the department’s permitting sites.
