Kapaa High School paddling teams took four of the six events Saturday during the final distance race in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation outrigger canoe paddling season on the Wailua River.
Waimea High School ended the day with two top finishes, both coming in the junior varsity races, where its A teams topped the JV boys race (15 minutes, 20.47 seconds), and the JV mixed (16:31.49).
Kapaa teams captured the JV girls (17:39.55), the varsity girls (35:25.69), the varsity boys (31:33.65), and the varsity mixed races after staying ahead of the Kauai team by just over three seconds (33:31.22 Kap vs. 33:34.45, Kauai).
Mishaps marred the varsity races when the Kauai A varsity boys team suffered a three-minute penalty for taking more than 50 percent of the lane on a turn, pushing the team to sixth place with a 34:43.92 paddle after penalty adjustments.
The race was taken by Kapaa’s boys on a 31:33.65 run.
Kapaa, taking the varsity mixed division race, suffered its share of mishaps after its D team was disqualified for burying the flag on the second turn.
With the weather cooperating since the inception of the series, the next KIF paddling regatta featuring the varsity crews stroking for a mile each with three turns, will take place on Jan. 6, 2018, starting at 9 a.m. on the Wailua River.
