Da Shadow: Status of road, bridge repairs
w Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from “The Shadow” radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.
Anahola
What is the status of the repairs to Aliomanu Road, including repair to the storm drain? Is this road planned to be repaved?
The county is in the process of finalizing the Supplemental Environmental Assessment for this project. From there, the county will work with the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to obtain the proper easements to move forward with construction.
Hanapepe
What is the status and timeline for the repair to the historic Hanapepe (swinging) pedestrian bridge and walkway?
The historic Hanapepe bridge, or 100-year-old bridge, elevated pedestrian walkway is currently closed to the public due to severe disrepair. Repairs to this walkway will require the county to fulfill the requirements of the federal National Historic Presentation Act prior to construction due to its historic nature. As such, a timeline of construction is not yet known.

Kahiliholo Rd is one to add to the list. One side was added on years ago without adequate gravel and subsoil underneath the tar. It has crumbled, collapsed and deteriorated to the point that accidents are happening and people drive in the middle of the road to avoid basketball pot holes at times. Dangerous situation that needs to be addressed.
