PRINCEVILLE — Jamie Stewart of Missouri, Blake Abercrombie of San Diego State, Nicolas Platret of Louisville and Devon Bling of UCLA are tied for the lead after shooting seven-under 65s Sunday during the opening round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, played at the Makai Golf Club at Princeville.
“Today is a nice day,” said University of Hawaii coach Ronn Miyashiro. “It’s the next two days I’m worried about.”
Weather forecasters are calling for winds to change from easterlies to south winds Sunday night and becoming southeasterly today and Tuesday. Showers are expected to increase after noon today, and there is an 80 percent chance of showers Tuesday.
Platret’s 65 helped catapault Louisville into the team lead, finishing the first round at 266, four strokes ahead of Missouri, which ended the day at 270 fueled by Stewart.
The ties did not stop at the leading position, as Simon Zach and Matthias Schmid of Louisville and Hayden Buckley of Missouri are all tied for fifth place after finishing the round with 6-under 66s.
Cameron Kaneko leads the host University of Hawaii B team after finishing with birdies on the 15th and 17th holes to overtake Taiga Iwasa for the lead and ending with a one-over 73.
Iwasa, leading with a one-under 35 after the front nine, had four bogeys on the back nine to end tied with Kaneko at 73 despite picking up a birdie on No. 18.
Other players in the Hawaii B team who finished play in 18th place include Chayutpol Kittiranttanapaiboon (73), Cole Yoshida (80), and Trevor Hirata (82).
Kauai native Bryden Salvador, an alumnus of Kapaa High School, finished the day at 79 (40-39) for a tie in 105th place.
He plays for the Hawaii A team, which finished the opening round at No. 20, and includes Nicholaus Nelson (74), Justin Ngan (78), Desmond Mello (78) and Justin Arcano (78).
Play continues today at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Twenty teams, including Louisville, Missouri, San Diego State, UCLA, Sam Houston State, Washington, Wake Forest, Ole Miss, Missouri-Kansas City, CSU-Fullerton, East Tennessee State, Utah Valley, Colorado, Cal Poly, San Diego, Georgia Southern, Louisiana, Hawaii B, Idaho and Hawaii A are participating, with the final round teeing off Tuesday.
