HONOLULU — Waimea High School’s varsity girls volleyball lost to Sacred Hearts in a consolation match Friday in the New City Nissan Girls Volleyball Championships – Division II state tournament.
The Menehune girls lost to the Lancers, of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, 2-0 — 25-19 and 25-11 — at Kaimuki High School in Honolulu.
With the loss, Waimea fell short of reaching the tournament fifth-place match. Statistics from Friday’s match are not available.
With Friday’s result, Waimea finishes the tournament 1-2 and ends its season with an 11-5 overall record, going 10-3 in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation season to win the league championship and a berth at the state tournament.
Prior to Friday’s match, Waimea lost to Nanakuli, of the Oahu Interscholastic Federation, in the quarterfinals on Thursday at Saint Francis School, 3-2 — 23-25, 25-21, 13-25, 27-25, 15-13.
In the opening round Wednesday, Waimea beat Hana, of the Maui Interscholastic League, 3-1, at Saint Francis — 25-18, 23-25, 25-12 and 25-18.
Waimea won this year’s KIF title after winning a second-round playoff match against Kapaa High School in straight sets, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-22 — on Oct. 17 at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea.
It was the Menehune’s first league championship since 2013 and the school’s seventh under head coach Chad Delanoza. He couldn’t be reached for contact Saturday.
