SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A former school bus driver charged with kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old special needs student nearly 20 years ago has been held without bail.
Henry Gonzalez appeared in court Friday a day after he was returned to Massachusetts from his native Dominican Republic.
Police say the 44-year-old Gonzalez assaulted the child in Saugus in 1998.
Authorities allege he picked up the girl at her home, but instead of taking her to school took her to a Lynn apartment and raped her. He then left her at a mall and she made her own way to school.
He had been scheduled for trial in 2000 but never showed up.
He was added to Massachusetts’ most wanted list in 2001.
His public defender for Friday’s hearing only did not immediately return a call.
