FILE- In this April 25, 1960, file photo, Dr. Gilbert Mason is flanked by officers who escorted him to court in Biloxi, Miss., after he expressed fear for his safety. Mason was arrested by Highway Patrolman Merritt Brunies, left, for obstructing traffic and disturbing the peace. Mason contended he stopped his car on the beach highway during racial clashes to give medical aid to an African-American boy being beaten by white men and was fighting in self defense. The National Register of Historic Places now includes the office of Mason, an African-American physician who pushed to desegregate beaches on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. (AP Photo, File)
